Marco´s Painful Excursion Into World Class!

27.11.2005: Welsh cruiserweight Enzo Maccarinelli paid a visit to the land of his parents - and set up his biggest fight, effortlessly brushing aside Berlin's Marco Heinichen in the opening round last night in Rome, Italy. The day before, contracts were signed for "Macca" to challenge WBO champion Johnny Nelson early next year, who did his part by retaining in the main event against Italian challenger Vincenzo Cantatore via split decision.

For Fight Production's Heinichen, whose record dropped to 8-12-2 (5), it was a brief and painful excursion into world class. Not in the mood to put his dream fight with Nelson into any kind of jeopardy, Maccarinelli, 22-1 (17), meant business from the first and, as it turned out, last bell. He floored Heinichen twice and though the German was standing and willing to go on, the referee sensibly stopped the mismatch.

"We knew Marco's chances were slim and close to non," said manager Olaf Schroeder, who worked the 32-year-old's corner, "but what is a journeyman supposed to do when he's offered ten times as much than he's getting on the 4-round, small-hall circuit? At least Marco showed he's fearless...".

Heinichen now plans to undergo a long-overdue elbow operation and enjoy a short Christmas holiday, before returning to the gym in the new year.
