Hinteregger Not Ready To Quit Just Yet

10.02.06: Austria’s former IBF/WBO Intercontinental champion Gotthard ‘The Cougar’ Hinteregger says he still has something to offer to boxing and will, as hinted earlier, try to come back after being stopped in both his last fights in the penultimate rounds. Manager Olaf Schroeder will still be at his side, though reluctantly as he readily admitted:

“We discussed all possible scenarios but the bottom line is, Gotti just doesn’t want to retire just yet. I think there’s no point in going on, especially at his age (39 next May) – actually I think it’s rather stupid to fight on – but he asked me to give him the benefit of doubt and help him for one more run.”

Superwelterweight Hinteregger, from Vienna, found glory late in his career only after joining Schroeder’s Fight Production, and rose to two Intercontinental crowns and a world rating. While he vacated the WBO’s version, he was reliefed of the IBF portion by German champion Marco Schulze and in his last outing lost to old rival Jozsef Matolcsi in December for the WBF ‘world’ title. In both fights, Hinteregger was stopped standing in eleven rounds and his record consequently dipped to 25-9-1 (13 KO’s).

When the Austrian now climbs back into the ring, gone will be trainers Hermann Bendl and Wolfgang Reiterer, as Hinteregger reunites with his first professional coach Johann Senfter.

“He has much more time to care for me and that’s what I need,” said the fallen champion, “Hermann has opened his own sports studio and Wolfgang is training a lot in athletics now, so they simply couldn’t give me the attention anymore like before.”
