The Cobra Is Back - But Poison Still Missing
BACK

29.05.06: After 18 months out of action and a move from Curacao to mainland Netherlands, Dutch-Dominican Cristian ‘La Cobra’ Frias stepped back into the ring last Saturday, May 27, in Visé, Belgium and continued where he left off with a 6-round win (unanimous decision) over Slovakian Jozef Kubovsky.

In his first fight under the Fight Production banner, Frias lifted his record to 20-0-2 (16 KO’s), but it was obvious that the ringrusty ‘Cobra’ had not yet gotten back his full poison. With trainer Joseph De Palm and manager/cutman Olaf Schroeder in his corner, Frias dominated the action to the extend that centurion Kubovsky had to turn to his huge bag of tricks to survive, but that he just did as the 29-year-old Frias’ timing and fluidity was admittedly missing after his long lay-off.

All three judges scored the fight a shut-out for Frias at 60:52, taking into consideration two deductions by referee Patrick DeVooght for headbutting.

“I’m just so happy to fight again and maybe I wanted to impress a bit too much,” said Frias, who had designed and sewn his own ‘Cobra ringwear’ for the occasion.

Originally, Frias was to come back in Slovenia on May 23, but then the fight was moved to Belgium four days later after visa problems had developed for the Dominican-born lightwelter, who now resides with his wife and three little children in The Netherlands.
