Unbeaten
Danish middleweight prospect Fawaz Nasir started
his professional career back in 2002, and has since
compiled a record of 9-0 (5), but haven’t been as
active as he would have liked. After signing with
managers Henrik Risum and Olaf Schroeder in the fall of
2004, Nasir won three straight fights before a clash of
heads turned his latest bout into a No-Contest. Since
then (October 2005) Nasir has again been inactive, but
now he is looking to return to the ring sooner rather
than later. I caught up with the polite and friendly
Dane for a small Q & A, and this is what he said:
Q:
Following your fight with Richard Remen last October,
what have you been up to since you haven’t been boxing
much?
|
A:
I had to take some time out of the gym because of the bad cut I
got in that fight, and at the same time I got a new job as a
postal worker. It’s a nice job, which keeps me in shape, as I
spend many hours on a bike every day. I’m getting very strong
legs now (laughs). Also, my working hours are early in the day,
so I will have the afternoons off to train now, something I
didn’t have in my previous day-job where I got off late every
day. I have done my roadwork frequently though, so it
shouldn’t take me too long to get back in fighting-shape.
Q:
I know that you have done quite a bit of modelling. Do you still
do this?
A:
Yes, I do once in a while. Maybe 2-3 times a month I get a job,
which is all right.
Q:
Getting back to boxing, how did you feel about that first
“blemish on your record against Remen, albeit just a
No-Contest?
A:
It was such a shame, because this guy I should have knocked out.
My trainer Brian Mathiasen and I had agreed to start slowly to
get some rounds, and then this happened in the third round. I
felt really bad about it, but that’s just how it goes
sometimes. Bad luck!
Q:
Henrik Risum, who manages you with Olaf Schroeder, have told me
that despite the lay-off it will now be time for you to step up
in competition. How do you feel about that?
A:
This is something that excites me! I’m happy about it, because
my motivation will get a kick up, and I’m sure it will bring
out the best in me. I’m looking forward to it…
Q:
What are your most immediate goals in boxing?
A:
I just want to maximize my potential, and I don’t think that a
European title fight is impossible some time next year if things
work out as we hope.
Q:
Did you watch Finland’s Amin Asikaninen become European
champion in your weight class recently? If so, what is your
opinion about him?
A:
I’m sorry, but I didn’t watch that fight, and I have never
seen him box. Is he good? I guess he must be since he is the
European champion now. It would be interesting if he were still
champ when I am ready for something like that, so the two of us
can get it on!
Q:
Thank you Fawaz. Anything you would like to say in closing?
A:
I just want to say that I am looking forward to returning to the
ring after the summer holidays, and that I cant wait. I am
looking forward to it like crazy, and I am looking forward to
start training serious again. Also, I want to say
congratulations to my friend Reda Zam Zam who beat American Joe
Wyatt last night (9/6) here in Aarhus. Watch out for Reda, he
will win the world title one day…
