9.1.2008:
Comebacking ex-International German and WBO
Intercontinental heavyweight champion
Willi Fischer,
34-6-1 (22 KO’s), pleaded ‘not guilty’ at Frankfurt Inferior
Court yesterday in a case that deals with an incident stemming
from 2003. After several hours of evidence taking, both the
court and the charged boxers’ lawyer agreed that more witnesses
shall testify and thus no judgment was given by the presiding
judge.
The 35-year-old Fischer last year signed with Fight Production
and embarked on a so far successful ring comeback, backed by an
all-new training team, but now has to deal again with his past.
The state attorney accuses that Fischer in November 2003, while
trying to collect monies for a third person, locked himself in a
restaurant office room with a debitor before getting physical.
The popular fighter, who goes by the ring moniker “De Ox”, on
the contrary testified not having been at the restaurant in
which the claimed altercation is said to have taken place nor
having ever before seen the alleged victim. A final verdict is
expected next month.
Olaf Schroeder, Fischer’s manager and head of Fight Production,
did not attend yesterday’s trial, but said:
“Whatever happened or not, it was long before Willi signed with
my company, so I can’t really comment on this case. Since we
work together, Willi has behaved impeccably, has not slipped up
in anything and concentrated hard on boxing, so I’m inclined to
believe him. I’m sure this will not derail him mentally and we
are all behind him!”. The manager is reportedly in talks with
Arena Box-Promotion and working towards a meaningful fight for
Fischer for late February.
