13.2.2008:
Hungarian newspaper ‘Blikk’ today broke the story that an
all-Hungarian showdown between current IBO ‘world’
superwelterweight champion
Attila ‘The Viper’ Kovacs
and former holder of the same title
Mihaly Kotai
has been discussed. Kotai, of course, has formerly been managed
by Fight Production, while Kovacs has just recently signed with
the company of German manager Olaf Schroeder.

Mihaly Kotai, called ‘The Tornado’ and still only 31 years old,
also was a long-time WBF ‘world’ superwelterweight king, but
retired with a 32-3-1 (16 KO’s) record two years ago after going
just 0-2-1 in his last three fights. ‘Blikk’ reports that Kotai
has indicated his interest to return for a clash with Kovacs,
himself at 33 years of age actually the senior of the two, in a
meeting with Felix Racz, Hungary’s leading promoter until Racz
decided to persue other business interests outside of boxing.
The newspaper further speculates that Racz might be tempted to
involve himself in the sport one more time. |

Kovacs’ manager Schroeder could not be reached for comment, as
he is currently in the Netherlands to work on Saturday’s
promotion featuring Fight Production’s heavyweight Willi
Fischer, although his office confirmed that “Olaf has all time
been in contact with Felix and obviously their talks always
center around boxing.” |

In the ‘Blikk’ article Kotai admits his current weight is as
high as 85 kg, but that he is ready and able to go down to
middleweight. Kovacs has an outstanding record of 21-1 (14 KO’s)
and is rated among the world’s top 20 superwelterweights by
internet service boxrec.com. However, the ‘Viper’ is still
waiting for his Fight Production debut after a mooted bout at
the end of December fell through. In any case, should the
rumours prove to be of any substance, Kovacs vs Kotai would be a
big event and a fascinating fight. |
