1.4.2008:
German heavyweight Willi
'De Ox' Fischer is set to continue his so-far
successful comeback campaign in May on a show staged by Arena
Box-Promotion, the Hamburg-based promotional firm today
announced. The former WBO heavyweight title challenger from
Frankfurt began his ring return last summer after a two-year lay
off under the guidance of Olaf Schroeder's German management
company Fight Production and is now on a four-fight winning run.
Fischer, 35-6-1 (22 KO's), was all set to challenge (interim)
German heavyweight champion Konstantin Airich last month, but a
cut suffered in a warm-up win against Tomas Mrazek in February
on a Fight Production co-promotion in The Netherlands scuppered
those plans. Ironically, it was 'De Ox' first fight abroad since
he flopped against Herbie Hide (who is now also promoted by
Arena) for the WBO title 10 years ago. Airich went on to face
Alex Mazikin instead and came away with a draw over eight
rounds, that very well could have been a loss according to most
reports. That might have led promoter Ahmet Oener of Arena to
change his plans as he said:
"After a fight in May, I would like Willi to challenge
new International German champion Steffen Kretschmann."
Despite enjoying considerable popularity in the Frankfurt area,
the 35-year-old Fischer will most likely not yet return to
Germany for his next fight in May, because Arena has confirmed
plans for shows in Spain or Turkey for that month. "This is our
only focus now," manager Schroeder said:
"Willi
has enough time to train and the pressure is now on him to
shine.
What comes after that we will discuss after that." |
