Kovacs Vacates IBO Title!

29.4.2008: Fight Production’s only reigning ‘world’ champion IBO superwelterweight king Attila ‘The Viper’ Kovacs’ decision to voluntarily relinquish his title today co-incited with the sanctioning bodies’ prolonged defence deadline running out, thus the title becomes vacant for the first time since 2004.

The 33-year-old Kovacs, 23-1 (16 KO’s), won the IBO crown in June 2006 from previous champion Steve Conway and made one successful defence, stopping Robert Frazier in ten rounds in May 2007, before signing with German manager Olaf Schroeder later that year.

“Since one year, there were practically no offers for Attila to defend, nor could a defence be organized in Hungary, because we could not get television support for the IBO title,” manager Schroeder explains the decision.

“No fighter wants to let go of a ‘world’ title without a fight and the IBO is among the more prestigous titles, but Attila now needs to look elsewhere for opportunities.” Kovacs had previously also held the IBF (interim) and WBA Intercontinental titles.

IBO president Ed Levine said from his Florida office:

“It’s unfortunate that Kovacs has been one year without a defence, but we wish him all the best for the future.”

By being no longer a holder of a ‘world’ title, Kovacs now again becomes eligible for being included in the EBU European ratings. The computer-calculated European ratings of internet service boxrec.com have ‘The Viper’ at # 7 in Europe.
