Fischer Bangs His Way Back Into Contention! |

14.12.2008:
Frankfurt heavyweight Willi Fischer made a clear
statement to all heavyweights in Germany, banging out Latvian
champion Edgar Kalnars in the fourth round with a big right hand
on the big Klitschko vs Rahman show in Mannheim, Germany on
Saturday (Dec. 13). The 36-year-old’s comeback now seems to take
up speed, as Fischer succeeded where unbeaten prospects
Sebastian Köber (now the new interim German champion), Dieter
Roth (who lost for that title against Köber) and Manuel Charr
all failed: Stopping the 31-year-old Kalnars from Riga in
Latvia. |

The night began with a minor nightmare, as no gloves could be
found fitting to the huge hands of the popular Fischer, who once
fought for the WBO ‘world’ heavyweight title. Kalnars was made
to wait for Fischer in the ring for what seemed endless minutes
and when finally adequat gloves for the Fight Production boxer
were found, Fischer was rushed to the ring without given any
time to warm up. Undisturbed, showing big mental strength,
Fischer set on the initiative, attacking Kalnars from the first
bell.
He knew he needed to make a statement here, screw the
circumstances. A big left hook rocked Kalnars back in the first,
but Fischer was too slow to recognize how badly shaken his
opponent was and the Latvian survived.
But that remained the only time, the word “slow” could be used
in any connection. |

Fischer, now 36-6-1 (23 KO’s), set the pace on quick legs,
always chasing Kalnars around the ring, cutting the same off.
Although Kalnars landed a good right on the jaw in the third, he
barely was given time to get set and get off anything more than
single shots. A big right cross from Fischer in the fourth
flattened the Latvian and ended matters in an impressive way.
Kalnars tried, but he just couldn’t get up in time.
“I’m delighted, that was the culmination of Willi’s comeback so
far,” beamed manager Olaf Schroeder, “all the hard work of Willi
and his team of Tom Leidenheimer, Matthias Werner and Boris
Schwarz now brings the dividends. We are firmly ready for a big
challenge now and hopefully I can soon announce the next step.
One possibility is a rematch against Timo Hoffmann, with whom
Willi still has some unfinished business in the ring.”
