Golden Oldie Hinteregger Defends IBF Title

‘The Cougar’ Trusts In Om

19.10.2005: Finally, on October 29 in Oranienburg (near Berlin), Germany, Austria’s only world-rated professional, Gotthard ‘The Cougar’ Hinteregger, 25-7-1 (12 KO’s), defends his IBF Intercontinental superwelterweight title against German champion Marco Schulze, 17-2 (10 KO’s).

That fight should have taken place already in July, but Hinteregger got ill and a demotivated Schulze slumped to an unnecessary points defeat against a substitute. Now the 38-year-old Vienna man is fit again, his 10 years younger challenger has rebounded nicely with a win and therefore the stage is set for a very interesting confrontation indeed, which will be aired live by DSF television.

Read on to see what ‘The Cougar’ has to say...

At the second attempt, after you had to pull out sick, you will finally defend your IBF Intercontinental title against Marco Schulze. Can we suppose all is well with you this time around?

Absolutely, the training is going just perfectly and I’m feeling real good! Actually, I have even prepared a bit more intensively than last time.

No worries to have to face Schulze near his German hometown in front of his notorious army of fans?

No, no, that’s great. I love Germany and I’m sure Germany loves me, too. I will also bring quite a few fans of mine, don’t worry.

So how will the fight go?

I have learned one lesson: No matter what, chances are always fifty-fifty before each fight. I need to concentrate, do my job, make no mistakes, then I’ll be allright.

You seem to hint at your two-fight-series with Jozsef Matolcsi. How difficult was it to face him again in your last outing, after he KO’d you in the first fight, when you were miles ahead and had the fight won?

The defeat wasn’t bad at all, it just hurt so much to have to learn in such a hard fashion. I knew all the time I’m technically much better than Matolcsi, I just made one mistake, just one stupid mistake. I lost concentration, I knew I couldn’t loose that fight, and then – boom!

What makes you think that won’t ever happen again?

Om. If you know what I mean…

Do you refer to the spiritual magazin that you are advertising for the first time in the Schulze fight? How did that came about?

Good question! Gour-Ni-Times is a spiritual magazin that my manager is also supporting and I think it’s a cool idea to put that on my trunks, because I’m also a very spiritual person. To promote God – is there anything more worthy?

Given you beat Schulze, what do you think the future in the ring holds for you, especially at your advanced age?

Really, I don’t want to talk about any fights post-Schulze. I can only work step-by-step and the next step is Schulze. After that fight, you can ask me this question again.
